What is a cochlear implant?
A cochlear implant does not simply amplify sound, it restores one’s sense of hearing by bypassing the cochlea’s non-functioning parts and sending signals to the brain through electrical stimulation.
The internal component of the device (consisting of the implant body and electrode array) is surgically implanted and sits under the skin. The implant is connected to the external audio processor that transmits the sound to the internal device.
The benefits of a cochlear implant include:
- Hearing better in both quiet and noisy environments
- Ability to locate where sounds are coming from
- Easier communication with friends and family
