What is robotic-assisted cochlear implant insertion?

Cochlear implants are now possible with robotic-assisted technology. Here’s what that means, in plain language.

The step it helps with

During cochlear implant surgery, your surgeon places a thin electrode array inside your cochlea. That’s the small, snail-shaped part of your inner ear. Traditionally, this step is done by hand.

With robotic-assisted insertion, your surgeon uses a system like the iotaSOFT® Insertion System for this step. iotaSOFT is designed to assist the surgeon during cochlear implantation by controlling the speed of electrode array insertion.

Your surgeon is still in charge

Robotic assistance doesn’t replace your surgeon. iotaSOFT enhances your surgeon’s ability to control the electrode array insertion. It gives your surgeon enhanced control during surgery, to levels beyond the capability of a human hand.

Why slow and steady matters

Your cochlea is delicate. iotaSOFT delivers a controlled insertion into your cochlea and is designed to reduce force variability and maximum force often experienced with manual insertion techniques.

In iotaMotion testing, iotaSOFT reduced maximum insertion force by up to 51%, and insertion force variation by up to 78%, compared to manual insertion (iotaMotion Data on File 722-036-0021).

Who it’s for

iotaSOFT is intended for use in ages 4 and up. It’s open platform technology compatible with all three cochlear implant manufacturers.

How to find it

Not every cochlear implant center offers robotic-assisted insertion. Use our Find a clinic page, or ask your surgeon directly.

Frequently asked questions

Does a robot perform my surgery?
No. Your surgeon performs the surgery. iotaSOFT is designed to assist the surgeon by controlling the speed of electrode array insertion.

Is iotaSOFT FDA-authorized?
Yes. iotaSOFT received FDA De Novo authorization (DEN190055) in 2021 and 510(k) clearance (K252339) in January 2026 for patients ages 4 and older.

Will it work with my implant?
iotaSOFT may be used for insertions with all 3 cochlear implant manufacturers.

Why does a controlled insertion matter?
iotaSOFT is designed to reduce electrode array insertion variability and forces, and to help preserve the delicate structures within your cochlea.

Is iotaSOFT right for me?

Indication: The iotaSOFT® Insertion System is intended to aid the surgeon in placement of cochlear implant electrode arrays into a radiographically normal cochlea by controlling the speed of implant insertion. The iotaSOFT® Insertion System is intended for use in cochlear implant patients ages 4 years and older during cochlear implant procedures using either a round window or cochleostomy approach.
